Interview Experience for UX Manager, Growth Team at Instagram
I recently interviewed for the UX Manager, Growth Team position at Instagram and would like to share a detailed account of my experience. This role focuses on leading the design strategy for Instagram’s growth initiatives, including improving user acquisition, engagement, and retention through user-centered design. The interview process was rigorous, assessing both my leadership skills and UX design expertise, particularly in the context of growth-driven product features.
Interview Process Overview
The interview process for the UX Manager, Growth Team was structured into multiple stages, including recruiter screenings, design exercises, and interviews with cross-functional teams. The focus was on both strategic thinking and the ability to lead design teams effectively in a fast-paced, data-driven environment like Instagram.
1. Initial Screening with Recruiter
The first step was a phone call with a recruiter, which focused on understanding my background and gauging my interest in the role. The recruiter outlined Instagram’s focus on growth-driven product initiatives and provided details about the team structure, particularly how UX managers collaborate closely with data scientists, product managers, and engineering.
Key topics discussed during the call:
- My UX design experience, particularly in growth-related features (e.g., user acquisition, engagement strategies, and retention).
- How I have worked with cross-functional teams to meet business goals and improve user experiences.
- My leadership experience in managing a UX team and guiding design strategy.
The recruiter also shared an overview of Instagram’s culture, emphasizing the importance of data-driven decision-making, and how UX plays a pivotal role in scaling and improving key business metrics such as user growth and retention.
2. First Round: Portfolio Review and Design Exercise
The first technical interview focused on portfolio review and a design exercise. The interviewer asked me to walk through key projects in my portfolio, particularly those related to growth and product scaling. The goal was to understand how I approached solving design problems in high-impact areas like user onboarding, feature adoption, and personalization.
Example Questions:
- “Tell us about a time when you worked on a product feature aimed at increasing user engagement. What was your design process, and what were the results?”
- “Can you show us a project where you optimized the user flow to improve conversion or onboarding for a growth initiative?”
The design exercise in this round involved user flow design for a hypothetical feature intended to boost user engagement or acquisition on Instagram. I was tasked with:
- Creating a user journey that balances simplicity with the need to introduce users to new features.
- Designing with a focus on scalability, given the large number of users on Instagram.
- Considering data-driven insights and user feedback in the design process.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Instagram’s growth team is highly collaborative, and the interviewers wanted to understand how I work with product managers, engineers, and data scientists to drive user growth and engagement. They asked how I facilitate communication between teams and how I ensure alignment on key initiatives.
Example Question: “Can you give an example of a time when you had to work closely with a product manager and engineer to launch a feature? How did you handle conflicts or disagreements in priorities?” -
Data-Driven Design: Growth initiatives at Instagram are often driven by data and user feedback. I was asked how I use metrics and user research to guide design decisions, particularly for growth and engagement-focused features.

Growth Strategy: The leaders wanted to understand my long-term vision for growth-related UX work at Instagram. Aligning UX with Business Goals: I was asked how I would measure the success of UX initiatives in growth and whether I had experience working with KPIs related to user acquisition, activation, and retention. They were interested in how I align UX design with business objectives to ensure measurable impact.
Example Question: “What are some of the key performance indicators (KPIs) you track when designing for user growth? How do you use these metrics to refine your designs?”
Vision for the Team: As a UX Manager, I was also asked to articulate my vision for building and leading a high-performing UX team within the growth context at Instagram.

5. Final Round: Cultural Fit and Offer
